Saab 9-X Air Concept Paris Motor Show

Making its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show, the Saab 9-X Air Concept is a four-seater convertible with a Canopy Top folding roof mounted on curved rear pillars with a separate retracting rear screen. With the 9-X Air, Saab tried to create a sports car that also offers open-top accommodation for four in ‘surround glass’ comfort. Under the hood, the concept features a 1.4 liter BioPower turbo engine optimized for E85 fuel (85% biothanol/15% gasoline), which delivers 200 hp (147 kW) and 280 Nm (207 lb.ft) of torque. According to Saab, the fuel consumption on gasoline over the combined cycle is 5.0 l/100 km (47 US mpg) and 119 g CO2/km. When using E85 fuel, CO2 emissions are projected at 107 g/km, with estimated fuel consumption of 6.5 l/100 km. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with an automatic clutch.

The car looks and sounds great, but Saab came up with a lot of concept cars over the last motor shows, and so far we really didn’t see any of those making it into production. Guess we’ll have to wait a little more. Enjoy the photos from the Paris show.

Saab 9-X Air BioHybrid

At next month’s Paris Motor Show, GM’s Swedish arm will present the Saab 9-X Air BioHybrid Concept. The design study is meant to give us a preview of how a possible Saab hybrid cabrio might look like. The most interesting part of the concept is its Canopy Top and the wraparound glasshouse that includes the rear screen. The four passenger cabrio is shares its powertrain with the 9-X BioHybrid, being powered by a 1.4-liter Saab BioPower engine that combines engine rightsizing with turbocharging, the use of E85 bioethanol fuel and hybrid technology.

Saab 9-5 previewed as sketch

New Saab 9-5 Sketch

Saab is a pretty well known manufacturer fighting with the top class luxury constructors like BMW or Mercedes, but lately sales haven’t been all so good with the sweedish producer, partly due that the current generation of cars are already out of date design-wise although from an engineering point of view are reliable. That is why Saab wanted to stress the development of the new 9-5 model, to show that their engineers are hard at work, with the help of this sketch, depicting the future line of design that will be found in the next generation of models.

Quite an agressive one in fact, the model resembling more of a coupe than a 4 door sedan which the sweedish manufacturer has got us used to. Rumours have also stated that this model will be set to contend performance-wise with the top AMG and M branded models from Mercedes and BMW, respectively. These rumours are based on the fact that Saab declared that the 9-5 will have “much of the fundamental technology already being produced in the Turbo X”, the current high performance model from the manufacturer.

One thing’s for sure, the sweedish manufacturer is definitely going to have a success with this model if it can market it properly, because all other aspects like design or performance are assured by it’s history and high build quality.

Geneva 2008: Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept

Saab 9-X Concept

Starting from the Aero X and the 9X concepts, Saab came to the Geneva Motor Show with the highly expected Saab 9-X Concept, which previews a future clean Saab compact car.

The concept looks great and that ’shooting-break’ styling is awesome. The 9-X also features touch-sensitive, keyless entry therefor it has no exterior door handles and there are no door mirrors also, because the car uses small, retracting rear-view camera pods. The roof is fitted with a large solar cell, which uses sun’s energy to charge the hybrid battery pack.

One of the most exciting features of the Saab 9-X Concept is its powertrain. The concept is powered by a 200 hp 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine which produces 280 Nm of torque and runs on E85 fuel (85% bioethano/15% gasoline). The engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with automatic clutch and steering wheel controls and the estimated fuel consumption when running on gasoline is 4.9 l/100 km and 117 g CO2/km, while when running on E85, CO2 emissions are projected to be even lower, at just 105 g/km and estimated fuel consumption of 6.4 l/100 km.

Saab 9-1X Concept Teaser Photo

With about two weeks before its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Saab released a teaser image of the Saab 9-1X Concept. Though the photo shows the car covered, we can tell that the hatch concept will probably follow the Saab Aero X concept’s design.

The Saab 9-1X will be based on the Opel Astra platform and WorldCarFans report that it will probably be powered by a turbocharged 1.4 liter engine and will be a player in the small premium hatchbacks, competing cars like the Volvo C30, BMW 1-series or the Mini Cooper.

Saab Aero X Concept Ice Experience

Saab Aero X Concept Ice

Saab had a very interesting idea of creating some buzz around its brand name, by creating the “Free Your Mind” experience. So, what exactly is this? Saab has created a special room in the IceHotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, where visitors get to see key Saab brand messages and Saab’s design heritage. And the main attraction is an ice sculpted Saab Aero X surrounded by impressive light and sound sequences. And it looks pretty cool too.

The “Free Your Mind” room is the creation of Simon Padian, chief designer for Saab and Tjåsa Gusfors, leading designer at the IceHotel. Here’s what Simon Padian said: “The Move Your Mind room is designed to be a journey, a flow, a pulse which aims to disrupt and challenge the visitors perceptions of what is normal or expected. The installation is designed to create an audiovisual experience that defies the visitor’s senses. We hope that the public will find it thought-provoking and leave feeling more engaged with the Saab brand.”

Saab 9-4x BioPower Concept

You’d expect carmakers to be more careful around large auto shows, like Detroit, but, for our pleasure, they’re not. So here are some leaked photos of the Saab 9-4x Biopower, presented by dutch website AutoTelegraaf. The concept is powered by a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine producing 245 hp and 353 Nm torque and if the fuel used it E85 Ethanol, then power increases to 300 hp and 400 Nm torque. From what we can see in these pics, the concept is a restyle version of the current 9-7x and looks really production-ready, so, probably depending on the public reaction, we’ll soon see this car on the roads.

Saab 9-3 Facelift Official Photos

Saab 9-3 Facelift

Even though everybody knew for some time how the Saab 9-3 facelift, which will be released next year, will look like, we now have an official release of some photos of this car. Most people look at Saab as an old company with no new fresh ideas and with aged models that don’t appeal no more. I don’t think so, I mean, I’ve always liked Saab for some reason I haven’t yet discovered, but the fact is that I like it. I don’t know if I would buy one, but I think it’s cool that it offers an interesting option for some people.

Now, about the upcoming 9-3 facelift, it is based on the Aero X concept and will feature bold styling and cutting edge technology for greater driving appeal. Unfortunately Saab didn’t give us any important info, except for that we already knew. No mechanical specs, so we don’t know much about the 290 Hp 2.8 V6 Turbo engine or Saab’s AWD technology. But we expect more info from Saab soon. Read More: "Saab 9-3 Facelift Official Photos"
