2008 Paris Special: Pininfarina Bollore Concept

Pininfarina Bollore Concept Paris Motor Show

This year’s Pininfarina stand was somehow sad, due to the big loss the company had back in August, when Andrea Pininfarina, the CEO, lost his life in a motorcycle accident. Both cars on display at the Italian stand, the Ferrari California and an electric car concept, were dedicated to his memory.

The Pininfarina Bollore concept, was one of the projects in which Andrea was a strong believer, and was developed by Pininfarina in cooperation with the Bolloré Group. The electric car was developed by the Pininfarina Design Department, led by Lowie Vermeersch, who has also coordinated projects like the Sintesi or the Ferrari California. That’s about all the info we’ve got on the concept, but here are the photos we took in Paris:

First picture of the Pininfarina Hyperion

Pininfarina Hyperion

Some time ago we wrote about Pininfarina working on the Hyperion, an ultra exclusive convertible based on the Rolls Royce Drophead Coupe. And now we’ve also got the first picture (if we don’t count the teaser photo already released) of the car that will make its first appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours in Monterey, California on August 13. Details are scarce so far, but we know that the project was ordered by a very rich collector and that the Hyperion will be powered by the same 450 hp 6.7 liter V12 from the Drophead, while the estimated price tag is £1million (around $2 million USD). Stay tuned, because we’ll come with more details once the car shows up at the show.

Andrea Pininfarina Death

The world’s auto industry stands still today, as the head of the famous Italian coachbuilder, Pininfarina, died in a road accident. 51 year old Andrea Pininfarina was involved in an accident in Trofarello near Turin. Police stated that he was riding a motorbike when he was involved in a collision with a Ford Fiesta. The Pininfarina Chief Executive, who was a part of the family business since 1983 and in current position since 2001, leaves behind a wife, two sons and a daughter. The company is expected to have a press release later today.

Our regrets to go his family and friends. Rest in Peace!

The $2 million convertible Rolls Royce Phantom

Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Pininfarina

Some of us might say that the Rolls Royce Drophead Coupe, priced at $600,000 is already an exclusive convertible. But apparently a rich collector doesn’t agree with that, because he asked Pininfarina, the famous Italian coachbuilder, to create an unique version of the Phantom.

The car, which will be named Hyperion (a Titan from the Greek mythology) and, as you can see from the teaser image, will be a really unique car. Pininfarina will create a complete new body for the car, inspired by pre-war Rolls-Royce models with an aerodynamic shape featuring a swept-back windscreen and sculpted flanks and a bespoke cabin. The interior will probably be redesigned as well, but we’re really curious how will Pininfarina beat the already exclusive interior on the production Drophead.

Nothing official so far, but AutoExpress estimates that the project will cost around £1 million (1.4 million Euros or $2 million).

Maserati Birdcage Concept

Everyone with a clue about the auto industry has heard of Pininfarina, one of the best designers out there. And Pininfarina is decided to impress again at the Geneva Motors Show, in March 2008, where they’ll present the Pininfarina Sintesi Concept. The concept is designed by the Pininfarina Design Department, under the direction of Lowie Vermeersch, the 33 year old Design Director, assisted by Vice Directors Guglielmo Cartia and Fabrizio Valentini and chief designers Jason Castriota, Giovanni Piccardo, Goran Popovic and Giuseppe Randazzo.

According to Vermeersch, the Sintesi “embraces innovative technologies that allow us to explore new typologies of mobility, active safety and packaging solutions.” We don’t have any photos, but check out the Maserati Birdcage 75th Concept, presented almost three years ago, in 2005 at the same Geneva Motor Show. Pretty cool, huh?
