A few weeks ago we wrote about Afzal Kahn paying almost $900,000 for the “F1″ license plate in the UK. Thought that was too much for a license plate? Let us tell you that this is actually loose change comparing to the $14 million paid by Saeed Khouri for the “#1″ license plate, in the United Arab Emirates. Khouri is a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, which didn’t make its fortune from oil-related business, as you’d expect, but from real state.
In the UAE, regular license plates have both arabic and Western characters, however there were also issued special license plates, that only have Western characters. Khouri’s $14 million smashed the record, held by another rich dude in the UAE, which bought the “#5″ for $6.8 million.
The plate was bought during a charity auction held by the Abu Dhabi Police Department. The past five auctions raised $56 million across 393 plates, with all proceeds going to charity. Money from todayy’s record sell will go to victims of road accidents.
